Astrakhan Porcelain
These endearing porcelain figures were produced by a relatively new factory, Scitalis, in the city of Astrakhan, Russia, at the mouth of the Volga River. The factory was found during the period of perestroika, in 1991. Scitalis orginially planned to produce versions of porcelain sturgeon, catfish, and hunting dogs for the tourists that came to Astrakhan to hunt and fish. As their beautiful piece became popular, they soon branched out into dogs, cats, and some wild animals - ranging from turtles and frogs to gorillas.
